Cougars once lived throughout the United States. However, habitat loss and overhunting led to fewer cougars in the wild. Cougars also face a threat from farmers trying to protect their animals. Today most cougars live west of the Mississippi River. There are a small number of cougars in Florida. They are called Florida panthers.
