Watch the music video for “Cardigan.”

Taylor wanted to give fans an escape from the hard reality of 2020 when she released folklore. However, “epiphany” is one song on the album that references images of the COVID-19 pandemic. The lines “someone’s daughter, someone’s mother / holds your hand through plastic now / ‘Doc, I think she’s crashing out’” are about the healthcare workers of the pandemic. The sick had to be separated and their own relatives couldn’t visit. It was a very lonely place to be. The healthcare workers were constantly facing very sad and difficult things as they worked. They were heroes. “Epiphany” also references soldiers. This connects the song to Taylor Swift’s grandfather who fought for the United States in World War II. The soldiers of this war are heroes of the country.
