The lions that live in India’s Gir Forest are called Asiatic lions. They used to live throughout the Middle East too. There are between 500 and 700 Asiatic lions left in the wild. They tend to be smaller than African lions. Asiatic lions also have an extra fold of skin that runs down their bellies. Male Asiatic lions have thinner and darker manes than African lions.
