No one knows what colors dinosaurs were. But scientists can guess what they looked like from their fossils. Scientists collect the bones from a fossil site. Then they put them together in a skeleton.

Stegosaurus had bony back plates called scutes. Scientists are not sure what the scutes were used for. The scutes might have helped Stegosaurus stay safe. The scutes might have helped it stay cool. This skeleton is in a museum in Germany.
