The earliest pizzas were topped with only tomatoes and cheese. Now people put many toppings on their pizza including many different meats and vegetables. Pepperoni, sausage, mushrooms, and onions are popular toppings.

The popular Margherita pizza was invented in Naples. In 1889, the Italian king and queen visited the city. They wanted to try pizza. A baker made them a basil, cheese, and tomato pizza. The queen loved it! It was then named “Margherita,” after the queen.
