Diabetes can be type 1 or type 2. Type 2 diabetes happens when there is a problem in the way the body uses glucose. For a long time, doctors only thought adults could get type 2 diabetes. But some children can get type 2. Type 2 diabetes occurs because the pancreas stops making enough insulin.
