More than 100 types of cinnamon trees grow in the wild. But farmers grow two main types to sell. The two types are Ceylon and cassia. Cassia is the most common. Cinnamon trees have green, oval leaves. They grow yellow-green flowers and black berries. But people cannot eat the berries.

Farmers want their cinnamon trees to grow very straight. This will mean that the sticks of cinnamon will be straight too.

Making Connections

Have you ever eaten something with cinnamon in it? If so, what did the food taste like? Did you like the cinnamon flavor?

Have you read books about how another spice is grown? How is that food similar to cinnamon? How is it different?

Cinnamon trees grow in warm, damp climates. Can you think of another food that grows in places like that?
