Sikhs have fought for their place in the world since the religion began. In 1984, the Sikh community became targets of violence in India after the prime minister Indira Gandhi was assassinated. The violence lasted for three days. 30,000 Sikhs were killed. Before the attacks started, the Indian government and specific Sikh followers had fought over the Golden Temple in Amritsar.
