Abraham Lincoln helped move the country toward the end of slavery through the Emancipation Proclamation. He made the announcement on January 1, 1863, during the Civil War. The Southern states were fighting to be their own nation. The Northern states fought to keep the country together. The Emancipation Proclamation said enslaved people in the Southern states were now free. As the Northern states won the war, they set these enslaved people free.
