Learn another way that guinea pigs may have gotten their name.

The montane guinea pig, or Cavia tshudii, is likely the main ancestor of domestic guinea pigs. Montane guinea pigs are native to the Andes mountains in South America. They can be found from Peru down to Chile and Argentina. They range in color from pale brown to reddish brown and dark brown.
