Chipmunks usually dig their burrows in forests. But they can also be found in people’s yards. Chipmunks might make their homes under decks, in gardens, or around walls of stone.

Chipmunks dig up plant roots for food. They also eat berries, nuts, and seeds. When chipmunks poop, they spread seeds around the forest floor. Some of these seeds grow to become new plants. Chipmunks also eat fungus that grows near tree roots. Both of these actions help the forest stay healthy.
