Ducks spend time in water, on land, and flying in the air. They live near fresh water ponds, lakes, and rivers.

Male ducks are brightly colored. They use their colors to attract females. Female ducks are much more plain. Their brown feathers help them hide from other animals. They can more easily protect their young. They can stay safe.

Making Connections

Have you ever seen a duck? If not, have you seen another animal in the wild?

Have you read another book about a different animal? How is that animal similar to a duck? How is it different?

Ducks spend time in water and on land. Can you think of any other animals that spend time on both water and land?
