Magnets pick up metal objects. But there are many kinds of metal. Magnets only work on some of them. Iron and nickel are attracted to magnets. So are metals with iron in them, such as steel. Other metals are not attracted. They include copper and brass.

Lodestone is a mineral that is naturally magnetic. It attracts pieces of iron. Lodestone was once believed to be magical. People thought it could cure wounds and illnesses.
